Cultural Significance

Sho’aríshon Park is a Neutral Nation Legacy Site.

The land holds deep cultural and archaeological significance, including proximity to a 17th-century Neutral burial site. The Neutral Nation (Attawandaron) were the first known inhabitants of this area.

The park was created to celebrate this history and ensure these stories are shared.

At times, private or community ceremonies may be taking place. Visitors are asked to:

• Maintain a respectful distance
• Keep noise to a minimum
• Follow any posted signage or guidance

Photography and recording may be restricted during these times.

Requests to hold a sacred fire must be submitted through the Town of Lincoln's webform.

Visitors can reach Sho’aríshon Park in two ways:

By Road
Drive to 3039 King Street, Jordan. Parking is available on site, with direct access into the park.

By Trail
Sho’aríshon Park can also be reached on foot via the Twenty Valley Trail, with access from both the Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre and Ball’s Falls Conservation Area.

The Twenty Valley Trail is a side trail of the Bruce Trail and runs through the Ontario Heritage Trust’s Ellis Property, a protected nature reserve. This route connects the Niagara Escarpment to the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, linking a range of natural and cultural destinations across the region.

Visitors using the trail are expected to:

• Remain on marked routes
• Follow posted guidelines
• Respect the natural environment

• The Ellis Property is a protected area and should be treated with care

Signed in 1784 and confirmed in 1792, TREATY No. 3, also known as the “BETWEEN THE LAKES TREATY” established a relationship between the Mississaugas of the Credit, an Anishinaabe First Nation, and the Crown. In exchange for £1,180 worth of goods, the treaty covered nearly 3 million acres, extending across much of today’s Niagara Region, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, and beyond. This land was later used to settle United Empire Loyalists and members of the Six Nations who supported Britain in the American Revolutionary War.

The term ANISHINAABE refers to a group of culturally and linguistically related peoples primarily indigenous to the areas surrounding the Great Lakes. Proximity to water has made the areas covered by Treaty No. 3 ideal for the Anishnaabe for hunting and fishing throughout time. They are known as PEOPLE OF THE WATER.

Records show that the Mississaugas lived here as early as 1715, but their oral history speaks of a presence far older, rooted in their responsibilities to protect and steward the land. For the Mississaugas, this land is not only a place of cultural identity and natural wealth but also of profound spiritual significance.

Today, we honour the enduring presence of the Mississaugas of the Credit, recognizing that this treaty land is valued beyond measure. It is a shared responsibility to respect and care for it, as those before us have done for generations.

Let this sign be a reminder of our shared heritage and commitment to reconciliation and respect for the First Peoples of these lands.

Signé en 1784 et confirmé en 1792, le TRAITÉ N° 3, aussi connu sous le nom de «TRAITÉ D'ENTRE-LES-LACS », a établi une relation entre les Mississaugas du Crédit, une Première Nation anishinaabe, et la Couronne. En échange de biens d'une valeur de 1 180 £, le traité couvrait près de 3 millions d'acres, s'étendant sur une grande partie de l'actuelle région du Niagara, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph et au-delà. Ces terres ont ensuite été utilisées pour l'établissement des Loyalistes de l'Empire-Uni et des Six Nations qui ont soutenu la Grande-Bretagne pendant la guerre d'indépendance américaine.

Le terme Anishinaabe désigne un groupe de peuples culturellement et linguistiquement apparentés, principalement autochtones des régions entourant les Grands Lacs. La proximité de l'eau a fait des zones couvertes par le Traité N° 3 des lieux de chasse et de pêche idéaux pour les Anishinaabe depuis toujours. On les appelle le PEUPLE DE L'EAU.

Les archives montrent que les Mississaugas vivaient ici dès 1715, mais leur histoire orale témoigne d'une présence bien plus ancienne, ancrée dans leurs responsabilités de protection et de gestion du territoire. Pour les Mississaugas, ce territoire est non seulement un lieu d'identité culturelle et de richesse naturelle, mais aussi d'une profonde signification spirituelle.

Aujourd'hui, nous honorons la présence durable des Mississaugas de Credit, reconnaissant que ces terres visées par un traité sont d'une valeur inestimable. C'est une responsabilité partagée de les respecter et d'en prendre soin, comme ceux qui nous ont précédés l'ont fait depuis des générations.

Nibi (Water) | Anishinaabe Teaching

In Anishinaabe tradition, Nibi (water) is alive and holds spirit. Women are traditionally the caretakers of water, offering prayers and songs to show gratitude and protection.

Listen for the rhythmic lapping of waves—a song of resilience and renewal.

Water Walkers are Anishinaabe women who walk the shorelines of our waterways, carrying copper pails of water and singing to honour it. These journeys are reminders that water is not to be taken for granted, it is a relative that gives and remembers.

The First Waters | Haudenosaunee Teaching

The Haudenosaunee tell of Sky Woman, who fell from the Sky World and was carried to the back of a great turtle. As she moved across its shell, the first waters formed, shaping the lakes and rivers that continue to sustain life.

Water’s Role Today

Water continues to define life in Lincoln. The 20 Mile Creek, once a key route for the First Nations, still flows into Lake Ontario. The lake shapes our climate, nourishes our fields, and provides drinking water.

Indigenous knowledge reminds us that we are all water protectors. Just as our ancestors cared for these waters, it is our duty to protect them for the next seven generations.

The owl is a guardian of the night, a keeper of secrets, and a silent hunter. Many Indigenous teachings tell of the owl’s wisdom, guiding us to trust our instincts and listen to the world beyond what is seen.

Spring Peeper | Kiiktanong | Kenkwité:ne Tsikere’táhnyaks | Rainette crucifère

This tiny frog carries the song of the changing seasons. As the land awakens in spring, its chorus fills the night, reminding us of renewal, resilience, and the power of small voices joining together.
