Flooding Prevention
Heavy rainfall can happen with little warning and may lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. While the Town of Lincoln maintains and cleans stormwater infrastructure throughout the year, residents also play an important role in helping protect their homes and properties from flood damage.
How the Town Helps Reduce Flooding
The Town of Lincoln takes proactive steps to prepare for significant rain events, including:
- Conducting an annual catch basin cleaning program each spring.
- Inspecting and maintaining stormwater infrastructure throughout the year.
- Monitoring weather forecasts and inspecting high-priority drainage areas before major storm events.
- Requiring stormwater management measures for new residential, commercial, and industrial developments in accordance with provincial and industry standards.
While these measures help reduce flooding risks, extreme weather and intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems and create localized flooding.
Sanitary Backwater Valve Pilot Subsidy Program
The Town of Lincoln has launched a Sanitary Backwater Valve Pilot Subsidy Program to help homeowners reduce the risk of basement flooding caused by sanitary sewer backups during heavy rain or rapid snowmelt.
Funding is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Homeowners with a history of sanitary basement flooding are expected to benefit most.
