Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation

The Niagara West Fire & Emergency Services holds the Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation under the Fire Underwriters Survey. This program tests the fire department's ability to transport water to areas without hydrants, ensuring fire protection for single-family detached homes in rural areas within eight (8) kilometres (by road) of a fire station in Lincoln.

Basic Requirements for Accreditation

To achieve the accreditation, the fire department must meet these standards:

  • Water Delivery: Within 5 minutes of arriving at a fire scene, firefighters must deliver a minimum of 900 litres (200 gallons) of water per minute.
  • Sustained Water Flow: The water flow must be maintained for two (2) continuous hours without interruption.

Benefits of Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation

  • Enhanced Protection for Rural Residents: This accreditation demonstrates that the Niagara West Fire & Emergency Services can effectively transport sufficient water to fire scenes in rural areas, providing peace of mind to residents.
  • Potential Insurance Cost Reductions: If you live in a detached home within eight (8) kilometres of a fire station, you may qualify for reduced fire insurance rates. Contact your insurance provider to learn if they offer discounts based on this accreditation.

Accreditation Details

The accreditation forms part of the Fire Underwriters Survey used to determine municipal fire insurance ratings. Achieving this status provides rural areas without hydrants with the same insurance benefits as those with hydrant protection.

Testing Requirements

  • Water Flow: Deliver 900 litres of water per minute within 5 minutes of arrival.
  • Sustained Flow: Maintain uninterrupted flow for 2 hours.
  • Test Location: The site must be within eight (8) kilometres of a fire station and at least five (5) kilometres from the nearest hydrant.

With the department's three tanker trucks, at least 900 litres per minute can be applied to fires in eligible areas. This capacity ensures sufficient water flow to enable firefighters to conduct rescues, extinguish flames, and control fire incidents effectively.
