Statement from the Town

Lincoln, ON – (April 9, 2025) – Today, the Ontario Government announced the expansion of strong mayor powers to 169 additional municipalities including the Town of Lincoln.

We are grateful to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for including our municipality in this expansion and are committed to ensuring that these tools are used responsibly and strategically to help accelerate the delivery of much-needed housing and other critical infrastructure in our community.

This new framework, effective May 1, 2025, will provide the Town with enhanced tools to support provincial priorities, particularly in housing development and infrastructure construction.

In the coming weeks, we will engage in a thorough review of the legislation, and I will work closely with the CAO, as well as my colleagues on Lincoln Council and senior staff, to understand the full scope of these new tools whether they be budgetary or development related. I will ask the CAO to prepare an information report for Council. Our goal is to ensure that our approach aligns with both provincial objectives and the needs of Lincoln residents. We recognize the importance of maintaining strong collaboration with our Council members, as these tools come with heightened accountability and oversight.

This is an important step toward streamlining local governance and addressing the challenges we face in building a range of housing stock and critical infrastructure. We look forward to working closely with the Province of Ontario and the Lincoln community to deliver on these ambitious goals, creating a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
