Lincoln, ON – (January 25, 2022) – The Town of Lincoln Council voted last night to combine existing public transportation services into a single, consolidated transit system for the Niagara Region.
Over the last decade, extensive work has been completed to develop a recommended governance strategy for consolidating transit in Niagara. A significant portion of this time was dedicated to the consultation: hearing input from municipalities, interested parties, and most importantly, the residents who stand to benefit from an enhanced transit system.
A healthy community is pedestrian-friendly and accommodates public transit to support the daily living of residents and visitors. A consolidated transit system also supports the Town’s Climate Adaptation Plan as residents can conserve energy in meaningful action. A consolidated transit system in the Niagara Region positively impacts residents by reducing barriers to participation in the community and access to services.
“A consolidated transit system for Niagara will be beneficial for all communities,” said Town of Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. “The expansion of safe, affordable, and accessible transit allows residents to make convenient travel plans region-wide and enjoy all the region has to offer.”
“Reliable public transportation networks provide immense benefits to the communities that invest in them,” said John (JD) Pachereva, Chair of the Town’s Community Services and Infrastructure Committee. “This forward-thinking provides an opportunity to prepare for growth in our Town and Region.”
“Workforce attraction and retention are among the top issues local businesses face,’ added Town of Lincoln’s Chief Administrative Officer, Michael Kirkopolous. “A consolidated transit system is a step forward in fulfilling the Town’s commitment to the business community as a place to invest.”
Ultimately, consolidated transit increases economic opportunities for employees and businesses, improves traffic safety, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and improves resident health, which helps build a greater sense of community and increased quality of life. It also provides a foundation for a more inclusive region.
