The Town of Lincoln’s Planning and Development Department supports orderly and sustainable growth through policy development, development review, and data-driven decision-making. The Town is continuing to expand its use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support planning, asset management, and operational needs across the municipality.

The GIS Student Assistant will provide technical GIS support to the Planning and Development Department and other municipal departments as required. This position offers hands-on experience working with real municipal data, supporting mapping, data management, and spatial analysis projects in a professional local government setting.

The role is primarily office-based, with occasional site visits. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required.

Key Responsibilities                                                                                               

The tasks to be undertaken include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain and enhance municipal GIS datasets, map products, and ArcGIS Online applications
  • Edit, validate, and standardize spatial and attribute data to support effective data management
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation for GIS workflows, datasets, and standards
  • Prepare cartographic maps and spatial graphics for internal and public‑facing communications
  • Deliver spatial analysis and research to support Planning and Development and Public Works initiatives
  • Assist with digitization, georeferencing, and integration of historical and legacy spatial data
  • Complete additional GIS and technical responsibilities as assigned

The Successful Candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program in GIS / Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Studies, Planning, Engineering or a related field
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS)
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Experience with Model Builder, Python or Arcade coding is an asset
  • Experience with AutoCAD or CAD-to-GIS workflows is an asset
  • Basic understanding of spatial data concepts and data quality
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

This seasonal student position is based on a 35-hour Monday–Friday work week from June to September, with the potential for an earlier start date depending on candidate availability. The hourly rate for this position is $19.41/hr.
