Lincoln, ON – (September 3, 2023) – Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning for the Niagara region, with hot and humid conditions forecasted for Sunday, September 3, 2023 through to at least mid-week.

Daytime highs on Sunday, September 3 will be near 29 to 32 degrees Celsius. As the week progresses, daytime highs are expected to increase to near 31 to 35 degrees Celsius. The hottest days looks to be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows for some areas will fall to just below alert criteria mainly in rural areas. Humidex values and daytime highs will be very atypical of early September.

Please note:

  • Areas near the lakes could be slightly cooler than regions further inland. As of September 3, Charles Daley Park is noted as safe for swimming according to Niagara Region's Beach Water Testing Results.
  • Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.
  • The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
  • Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
  • Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
  • Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
  • Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
