Lincoln, ON – (September 18, 2024) – On September 13, 2024, the Town of Lincoln partnered once again with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Hamilton Police Service (HRPS), and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to carry out another successful safety blitz focused on commercial motor vehicle enforcement. These ongoing efforts highlight the Town's commitment to improving roadway safety through consistent collaboration and proactive enforcement.

The initiative’s primary focus was to identify commercial vehicles that deliberately bypass the Vineland Inspection Station on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and to perform comprehensive safety inspections, ensuring compliance with the Province of Ontario’s road safety standards.

“Through these joint enforcement blitzes, we’re making noticeable progress in keeping our roads safer,” said Town of Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton. “Our strong partnerships with law enforcement and transportation agencies continue to yield positive results, and we remain committed to ensuring that both residents and visitors can travel safely throughout our community.”

The statistics from the recent initiative include:

  • 21 vehicles were comprehensively inspected.
  • 6 vehicles were removed from the highway after significant safety concerns were identified.
  • 18 charges were laid.

“Collaborative efforts like these are critical to maintaining the safety and integrity of our roadways,” said Tony Brunet, Ward 2 Councillor and Chair of the Town’s Community Services and Infrastructure Committee. “This latest blitz demonstrates that our strategy is working. We will continue to push these proactive efforts forward to address traffic safety issues and protect the well-being of everyone in Lincoln.”

Chief Administrative Officer Michael Kirkopoulos added, “Our joint efforts with regional partners demonstrate our continued commitment to road safety. These initiatives are driving real results, and we will remain focused on ensuring Lincoln is a safe and welcoming place for all.”

These safety blitzes align with Council's objective to divert commercial vehicle traffic away from the Town's downtown areas, directing them instead to regional and municipal roads better suited for larger trucks. This redirection supports local businesses and the economy by maintaining the smooth flow of goods.

Background

Truck Traffic in Lincoln and History of Safety Blitzes

In April 2019, Lincoln Council approved a resolution regarding truck safety in Lincoln, which addressed community concerns related to truck traffic and identified several action items to address the concerns. In the short term, the Beamsville Alternate Truck Route Initiative is planned to redirect truck traffic from the downtown area of Beamsville and along Bartlett Road and Durham Road.

In the longer term, the Niagara Escarpment Crossing Project will be a new north-south truck route strategically located between the QEW and Regional Road 20. This route supports the need identified in the Niagara Region Transportation Master Plan for a new north-south escarpment crossing linking the QEW with Highway 20. It will offset the implications of high commercial vehicle traffic travelling through urban and residential areas within the west Niagara communities of Lincoln and Grimsby.

The Town’s Transportation Master Plan developed comprehensive strategies for the movement of goods which requires ongoing partnership with the Niagara Region and other key agencies such as the Minister of Transportation and Niagara Regional Police.
