The Moccasin Identifier

The Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre and the Lincoln Pelham Public Library are proud to partner with the Beamsville Girl Guides to present the Moccasin Identifier during National Truth and Reconciliation week (September 26-30). National Truth and Reconciliation week (National day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30) honour the victims of residential schools and their families and communities.

All Canadians are encouraged to wear orange on September 30th to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters.” The Girl Guides will paint orange moccasins at the Fleming Centre in Beamsville and the Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre in Jordan.

The Moccasin Identifier was founded in 2011 by the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation to “advance Treaty and Indigenous awareness by covering Canada in moccasins.” Improving Treaty and Indigenous awareness through education directly benefits Truth and Reconciliation.

The Moccasin was chosen to represent what connects each Indigenous person to the land. Each design is unique to the nation and groups that created them, a reflection of the diversity of the ancestral cultures that existed before the first settlers arrived.

The Town of Lincoln is within the Treaty Lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. It is part of the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Hatiwendaronk, and the Anishinaabe. Many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people from across Turtle Island live and work in Lincoln today.
