Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation

Town of Lincoln Fire Rescue & Emergency Services Achieves the Fire Underwriters Survey Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation

What is the Fire Underwriters Survey Rating?

The Superior Tanker Shuttle Service test forms part of the Fire Underwriters Survey Rating for the municipality that insurance companies use to determine property insurance premiums. Achievement of the Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation generally provides for hydrant protected insurance ratings for areas of the municipality not equipped with fire hydrants. To qualify for the accreditation, the fire department must be able to:

w      Within 5 minutes of the first pumper truck arriving on the fire scene (test site), demonstrate flowing a minimum of 900 litres per minute (200 gallons per minute) of water, and 

w      Maintain the flow uninterrupted for 2 hours.

The test site must be within 8 kilometres of the fire station, and must be at least 5 kilometres from the location where the tankers are reloaded.

Upgraded Rating

As a result of successfully completing the test, the Town of Lincoln was granted the Fire Underwriters Survey "Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation" for single-family detached residential properties in rural areas within 8 kilometres by road of a fire station.

What Does the Accreditation Mean to Rural Residents?

Successfully completing the test indicates that Lincoln Fire Rescue & Emergency Services is able to effectively transport water to fire incident scenes throughout our community.

For those residents within 8 km of a fire station, it means that at least 900 litres per minute can be transported and applied to a fire. 900 litres per minute is equivalent to the flow of two 45 mm attack hose lines - what is typically required to effectively bring a house fire under control.

Many (but not all) insurance companies recognize the Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation. Those rural residents with homes within 8 km of a fire station by road may receive a reduction in fire insurance premiums. Rural residents should contact their insurance agent and ask if they qualify for a rate reduction.

Regardless of the potential impact on insurance rates, the achievement of the Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation means that Town of Lincoln Fire Rescue & Emergency Services has demonstrated its ability to transport sufficient quantities of water to rural fire scenes to protect our citizens.
