Town of Lincoln Going LED

The Town of Lincoln is partnering with Realterm Energy through the Association of Municipalities of Ontariol/Local Area Services for the conversion of the Town's streetlights to new LED (light emitting diode) technology.

WHY IS THE TOWN OF LINCOLN DOING AN LED STREET LIGHT CONVERSION?

The Town will reduce its energy consumption, energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and maintenance costs while providing better light quality on our streets and roadways.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE LED STREET LIGHT CONVERSION?

•63% Reduced energy consumption (537,315 Kilowatt-hours of energy per year)
•49% energy cost savings
•48 metric tonnes annually and 1,093 metric tonnes over the life of the fixture in reduced greenhouse gas emissions
•23 year lifespan = Approximately 80% reduced maintenance costs (LEDs last four times longer than the existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures
•Much lower failure rate than HPS fixtures (also contributes to reduced maintenance costs)
•Better CRI (Colour Rendering Index) = white light rather than the orange of the previous HPS fixtures
•Reduced light pollution; International Dark Sky Approved

WHY NOW?

•Price reduction and stabilization:  LED prices dropped considerably and have then stabilized over the last few years
•Technology stabilization: LED streetlight technology has proven itself with millions of installations over the last few years
•IESO Incentive of $142,614 = 23% of total project cost

HOW MANY STREET LIGHTS WILL BE REPLACED WITH LED STREET LIGHTS?

This project will replace Lincoln’s 1,463 cobra head streetlights with LED streetlights from CREE Canada.  The decorative streetlights will not be replaced at this time.

WHAT ARE THE ANTICIPATED INSTALLATION IMPACTS FOR MY NEIGHBORHOOD?

Residents and business owners will experience only minor installation impact. There will be no permanent construction sites, as crews will be mobile during the installation phase. Proper traffic control will be in effect, with clear signage directing motorists around the installation locations.

WHEN WILL THE WORK TAKE PLACE?

Residents will start noticing improved lighting along streets and roads beginning in the end of November 2015.  The project will span a period of a few months as all streetlights are replaced.

WHAT IS BEING DONE WITH THE STREET LIGHTS THAT ARE BEING REMOVED?

The existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) streetlights will be removed and fully recycled (including proper removal of the mercury) at qualified environmental disposal centers.
